Important: Always verify the latest rules at the Thailand Immigration Bureau. Deadlines are strict — missing paperwork can lead to fines or loss of visa status.
Note: The following details on this page could not be fully confirmed from publicly accessible official sources and should be verified directly with the Immigration Bureau (call 1178) or the ISC office before acting on them:
  • Visa type change fee (2,000 THB) — plausible but not explicitly listed on the official fee schedule
  • 48-hour departure requirement after visa cancellation — not found in accessible official web pages; verify with ISC or Immigration Bureau directly

Your Visa Journey at a Glance

From acceptance to graduation, here are the key visa milestones every international student must manage:

Before You Arrive

Apply for initial ED visa at a Thai Embassy/Consulate in your home country

Within 24 Hours of Arrival

Report your address to immigration (TM.30) — your landlord or hotel may do this for you

Ongoing Each Year

Extend your ED visa, file 90-day notifications, and obtain re-entry permits before any travel

Step 1: Getting Your First ED Visa (Before Arrival)

The Non-Immigrant "ED" (Education) visa is required for all international students studying at Siam University. You must obtain this before entering Thailand at a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

Documents Typically Required for Initial Application
  1. Valid passport (minimum 18 months remaining validity recommended)
  2. Official acceptance/enrollment letter from Siam University
  3. Completed visa application form (available at the Thai Embassy)
  4. Recent passport-sized photographs (as specified by the embassy)
  5. Proof of financial means (bank statement showing sufficient funds)
  6. High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor applicants) / Bachelor degree (Master applicants)
  7. Visa fee payment
Requirements vary by country. Contact the Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country to confirm the exact document list before applying. The International Student Center (isc@siam.edu) can provide your acceptance letter and any supporting university documents.

Step 2: Address Reporting on Arrival (TM.30)

Under Thai immigration law, every foreigner must have their place of residence reported to immigration using form TM.30 within 24 hours of arrival at any accommodation.

Who files TM.30?
  • Hotel / dormitory: The establishment files it automatically.
  • Private rental: Your landlord is legally required to file it. Confirm with them upon check-in.
  • If in doubt: You can file it yourself at the local immigration office.
Important Notes
  • A new TM.30 is required every time you re-enter Thailand or change your address.
  • Without a valid TM.30 on file, your visa extension application may be rejected.
  • TM.30 can be downloaded as PDF or filed online at tm30.immigration.go.th.
Common mistake: Many students assume their landlord filed TM.30 but never confirm it. Always ask for written confirmation or a receipt from your landlord.

90-Day Notification

Once the Immigration Bureau has admitted students into the country, their passports will be stamped with conditions of entry. One such condition is the 90-Day Notification.

90-Day notification form TM.47 is available at the International Student Center, as a direct PDF download, or filed online at tm47.immigration.go.th.

Notes:
  • You may submit from 15 days before up to 7 days after the due date. Submitting before the due date is recommended. Subject to changes — check the Immigration Bureau website for the latest.
  • Staying in Thailand over 90 days without notifying the bureau: fine of 2,000 THB. If arrested by police: 5,000 THB.
  • If you leave Thailand and re-enter, the 90-day count restarts from day 1.
  • The 90-day notification is not equivalent to a Visa Extension.

Re-Entry Permit

Students who plan to spend their holidays outside Thailand must apply for a single or multiple re-entry permit before departure. Without it, your Non-Immigrant "ED" visa will be invalidated and you will need to obtain a new student visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad.

Re-entry permits can be obtained at the local Immigration Bureau and at the airport. Download the TM.8 Re-Entry Permit form (PDF) in advance.

Visa Cancellation

Students holding a Non-Immigrant Visa from Siam University who will graduate, transfer credits, apply for further study, or work in Thailand must contact the office to request a visa cancellation letter 4 weeks prior to the due date.

Without this letter, you may be fined 500 THB per day from the day you graduate until you are accepted by another institute or organization. Students who cancel their visas must leave Thailand within 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start preparing documents at least 5 weeks before your visa expiry date. Some documents (e.g., official transcripts, finance receipts) require time to obtain from university offices. Do not wait until the last week — late submissions can result in visa lapses, overstay fines, or rejection.

Consequences depend on which deadline you miss:
  • Visa extension late: Your visa may expire, making you an overstay — fines of 500 THB per day apply.
  • 90-day notification late: Fine of 2,000 THB; 5,000 THB if arrested by police.
  • TM.30 not filed: Your visa extension application can be rejected.
  • Visa cancellation not filed after graduation: Fine of 500 THB per day from graduation date.

Yes, it is possible to change visa type inside Thailand at the Immigration Bureau — this costs 2,000 THB. However, this process is not guaranteed to be approved and is subject to immigration discretion. It is strongly recommended to obtain your ED visa before travelling to Thailand through a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country. Contact the ISC (isc@siam.edu) before attempting a visa type change.
